Life and Community

Today, David’s Promise participants engage in life enrichment activities that promote independence, life skill development, connection, social development, and volunteerism. As part of the David’s Promise community, participants are actively learning, and involved in serving each other and our community.

Just because formal schooling for participants has ended, learning and personal growth doesn’t need to. Our life enrichment programming changes from day to day; however programming regularly includes fitness classes, volunteerism in and for the community, gardening, music therapy, cooking, job readiness skills acquisition, and art and theatre classes.

The upper suite of the Compassionate Ministries Center, known as The Table, provides David’s Promise participant’s opportunities to develop volunteer and job readiness skills related to those working in a coffee bar, serving as baristas, servers, and cleaners. The Table, serves as a location for community members to gather and enjoy one another’s company, as well as have a great cup of coffee or specialty drink made by our David’s Promise participants. In addition to the community gathering at The Table, participants also enjoy just hanging out with their peers at The Table.

David’s Promise also provides participants the opportunity to be part of the Lyle Torrant and Kit Young Center graduation ceremony which includes a sit down dinner and prom. Since 2011, we have hosted the event.

Additionally, David’s Promise participants have the opportunity to attend New Song Music Therapy Camp, an event that is hosted by CMJC and Harmony Gardens Music Therapy Services. Focused on ability and inclusion, this incredible camp provides life-changing experiences for everyone involved through musical expression, movement, performance and social music-making.

Serving others is a big part of David’s Promise. Participants are provided opportunities to be actively involved in serving our community. The David’s Promise community serves regularly throughout the growing season in our community garden. Gardening projects include planting, weeding, and harvesting vegetables, which are given to families and individuals in need.

Participants have made table favors for community-wide dinners, made items for the local animal shelter, sewed hats and mittens to give to the homeless, and serve in our community food pantries. Participants also fill food bags for children in need, through CMJC’s After-School Backpack program.

Our Support

David’s Promise is a ministry of Compassionate Ministries of Jackson County. Currently, participants can be part of the David’s Promise community at no cost. We are a faith-based nonprofit that depends upon the faithful giving from community members, churches, organizations and foundations throughout the US.
