Joe Lathrop, President

Flagstar Bank

One of the greatest wishes of Joe’s heart is for everyone in the Jackson community to feel the love of God through all who claim the name of Jesus Christ. He believes this is done by meeting the tangible, emotional, and spiritual concerns of those in need. He is humbled to be able to serve.

Joe is a Senior Vice President with Flagstar Bank. Over the years, he has served on the boards of the John George Home, United Way of Jackson County, the Northwest School Board, Junior Achievement Board and Irish Hills Girl Scout Council, Joe grew up in the Stockbridge area and lived in Jackson for 30 years.

Tony Curtis, Treasurer

The Cardinal Group

Tony is Chief Financial Officer for The Cardinal Group.  Prior to joining TCG in July 2015, Tony was a CPA in the Jackson community for over 35 years.

Since arriving in Jackson as a new college graduate from Ferris State University, Tony has been active in many professional and community organizations include the Jackson Chamber, Little League baseball, United Way and is also on the board of a local faith based organization focused on improving the reading, writing and life skills of at-risk youth.  Tony is also a continuing education program leader for Non Profit Network.

Gary Swartzlander

Jaxnaz Church

Gary and his wife Peggy have made Jackson their home for the last 33 years. Gary has been a board member at Jackson First Church of the Nazarene for 30 years. He currently serves as Board Chairman.

He has been involved in the Jackson community as well as their church, his activities have included; graduate, board member and President of the Jackson Leadership Academy, Board Member and President of the Jackson Jaycees and he held several state offices with the Michigan Jaycees.  Gary has served on the board of directors of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Jackson County and was Board President.  He has been involved with the Boy Scouts of America serving that organization in several capacities. He recently has again joined the Big Brothers Big Sisters Board of Jackson County Board of Directors

Rachelle Markowski

Kit Young Alumnus

Rachelle is a graduate of the Kit Young Center. She joined Kiwanis Action Club in 2013 and has held several offices and currently serves as Secretary.  

Rachelle is a very active community member, volunteering in many ways. She assembles Blessing Bags for CMJC as well as a leader of lunch prayer and cleanup person for Queen's preschool. She's an regularly scheduled altar server for Queens as well as a regular scheduled hospitality person. She serves regularly at the Queen's community-wide dinners. 

In 2014, she won the Dignity of Life Award given by Jackson Right to Life, for being a voice for all the unborn babies who test positive for Down Syndrome.  She also participated in the National Down Syndrome's annual Buddy Walk in 2015, and is an advocate for adoption of Down Syndrome babies as well. 

Sue Markowski

Queen of the Miraculous Medal Church

Sue is retired from South Central Credit Union as a collector after eight years.  Sue also spent 16 years with team of collectors for Jacobson's Inc. She spent eight years with City of Jackson's Engineering and Public Works in cost accounting.    

Since retirement, Sue volunteers with the Queen's community-wide dinners and keeps active in Bible studies and hospitality. Sue is also active in the Kiwanis Aktion Club.                               

Garry Trammell


Garry is a Jackson area native and he's served in the insurance industry for over 25 years working with Prudential, Northwestern Mutual, and for the last 16 years, Coverys. He's served in a variety of leadership roles including training, teaching, and mentoring in his profession, as well as his involvement in various committees, councils, and boards of local churches. Garry has a passion for living and working together in community to respect the dignity and humanity of each and every person.

Wendy Valentine

Pastor, The BEacon Church

Wendy moved to Michigan in 1992 while working as the head trainer for SMX Corporation, a Chicago based organization. When that company closed after 50 years in 1994, Wendy and her husband Ross started Tri-State Technical Services, a service company that maintains computerized industrial embroidery machines. They relocated to the Jackson area from Royal Oak in 1995, and presently support over 300 embroidery companies in Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana.

Currently, Wendy is enrolled at Spring Arbor University working on a BA in Pastoral Ministry. In 2015 she took over as Pastor of The Beacon Church, a Non-Denominational church she attended since its inception in 1997.

Wendy’s passion is for unity in the community. She is thrilled to work together with other local churches and para-church organizations to meet the many needs faced by the families in her area.

Dan Evans

Retired Superintendent, Jackson Public Schools

Mr. Daniel Evans served the Jackson community from 1994 to 2014. As its longest serving Superintendent, Mr. Evans was able to lead the district forward educationally despite persistent challenges of increasing competition, scarce resources, and the distractions of a politically charged community environment. His passion to improve the lives of children has never wavered. Mr. Evans has recently turned his attention to working in his local church. He is a Board member at Jackson Church of the Nazarene and a newly appointed board member of Jackson County Compassionate Ministries. In both roles it is his goal to serve God and his neighbors with real action.

Mr. Evans received his Bachelors and Master’s degrees from Michigan State University. He has extended his education at Grand Valley State University, Spring Arbor University, and Eastern Michigan University. Dan is also proud of being a two sport athlete at MSU, participating in both Football and Wrestling while on scholarship. Finally, Dan treasures his thirty eight year marriage to Cherie, his three children Danielle, Jessica, and Adam and his thirteen grandchildren.
